Kayfus hits 1st major league homer, Guardians beat White Sox 3-1 for 5th straight win

CJ Kayfus hit his first major league home run and scored twice to help the Cleveland Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Saturday night for their fifth straight victory. Kayfus, promoted to the majors Aug. 2, homered in the sixth for a 3-1 lead. He walked and scored the tiebreaking run on Brayan Rocchio's double in the fourth. Kayfus, who had a three-run double in a 9-5 victory Friday night, has seven hits in his first 23 at-bats, four for extra bases. Steven Kwan led off the game with a double and scored on Kyle Manzardo's single for Cleveland's other run. Joey Cantillo (3-2) went 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Cade Smith got his fifth save with a perfect ninth. Chicago's Michael A. Taylor hit eighth homer this season and third in the last four games to tie it in second. He had two of Chicago's four hits. Sean Burke (4-9) started and pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Kafus' first homer made him first Cleveland player with four extra-base hits, including a home run, in his first seven MLB games since current teammate Carlos Santana in 2010. The Guardians are six games over .500 (61-55) for the first time since June 4 (33-27). The three-game series concludes Sunday with Cleveland RHP Slade Cecconi (5-4, 3.72) facing Davis Martin (3-9, 4.11).

Gavin Williams nearly records no-hitter as Guardians put away Mets

August 6 - Gavin Williams was two outs away from the Cleveland Guardians' first no-hitter in 44 years as the visitors took down the New York Mets 4-1 to complete the sweep on Wednesday afternoon. After striking out Francisco Lindor to open the bottom of the ninth inning, Williams' no-hit bid was spoiled when Juan Soto belted a solo home run to dead center. Williams (7-4) struck out six and walked four before he was removed after throwing 126 pitches over 8 2/3 innings. Hunter Gaddis recorded the final out for his second save of the season. Williams was attempting to become the first Cleveland player to throw a no-hitter since Len Barker tossed a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 15, 1981, a span of 6,987 games. Williams was at 75 pitches through five innings, 89 through six, 97 through seven and 111 through eight. His season high was 109 pitches on May 26 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. David Fry and Angel Martinez each homered for the Guardians, who have won seven of eight. New York left-hander David Peterson (7-5) allowed four runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two in his first loss since June 27. The Mets have lost four in a row and eight of nine to fall out of first place in the National League East. Peterson sped through an eight-pitch first inning, but Fry jumped on a 1-2 fastball to lead off the second and homered deep over the fence in left-center field for a 1-0 lead. Steven Kwan singled up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to start the third for the Guardians. Martinez then turned on a slider and lined it over the fence in left for a two-run homer, snapping an 0-for-19 skid and giving Cleveland a 3-0 advantage. Carlos Santana walked with two outs in the sixth for Cleveland, and Gabriel Arias tripled into the right-center field gap to score Santana for a 4-0 lead. Williams knocked down a line drive back to the mound by Lindor in the first and then threw him out. He then caught a soft line drive back to him from Pete Alonso to end the inning. Williams walked Brandon Nimmo on seven pitches to lead off the second. While a wild pitch over the head of Mark Vientos moved Nimmo to second, the Mets stranded runners on the corners. Cleveland right fielder C.J. Kayfus made a diving catch off the bat of Vientos with one out in the seventh to keep the no-hitter intact. --Field Level Media

Guardians' Gavin Williams falls just short of no-hitting the Mets, as New York's malaise continues

NEW YORK — Cleveland Guardians starter Gavin Williams lost his no-hit bid against the New York Mets when Juan Soto hit a solo home run with one out in the ninth inning on Wednesday afternoon. The Guardians would win the game 4-1. Williams stayed in the game for two more batters, leaving one out shy of a complete game, as a two-out walk to Brandon Nimmo ended Williams' outing. He threw 126 pitches. Reliever Hunter Gaddis recorded the final out in the Guardians' win. Cleveland hasn't completed a no-hitter in 44 years, the longest active drought in MLB. Advertisement Soto's home run was the Mets' first hit since the fourth inning of Tuesday night's game. Williams befuddled the Mets using a mix of five pitches. He relied on his upper-90s fastball and curveball to limit the Mets to just four hard-hit balls. Before Soto's home run, there were two instances where the Mets appeared closest to recording a hit. Francisco Lindor led off the bottom of the first inning with a hard-hit comebacker carrying an exit velocity of 107.2 mph that knocked Williams' glove off. But the pitcher never lost composure, picked up the ball and made the throw to first base for an out. In the seventh inning, Mark Vientos hit a line drive to right field, but C.J. Kayfus made a diving catch. The last pitcher to throw a no-hitter against the Mets was Max Scherzer, who accomplished the feat with the Washington Nationals on Oct. 3, 2015. The Mets have lost four in a row and eight of their last 10 games. They are 2 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East and have a 2 1/2 game lead over the Cincinnati Reds for the third wild-card spot. Since the All-Star break, the Mets have the second-lowest team OPS in baseball (.655) and are hitting just .222 as a team. Cleveland has won three straight games and are within a game of the final wild-card spot in the American League. Spot the pattern. Cleveland Guardians' All-Star, MLB Trade Candidate, Being Investigated for Gambling

Chasing first place in the American League Central, the Cleveland Guardians could use a boost before the July 31 MLB trade deadline passes. Unfortunately, after Monday's news, the Guardians will need even more help than they anticipated. According to ESPN's MLB expert Jeff Passan, three-time All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on the non-disciplinary paid leave list. This is a result of the MLB's ongoing sports-betting investigation. If this sounds like a broken record, it's because it is a very familiar story to the Guardians, as fellow pitcher Luis Ortiz is already on paid leave for the same reasons. Clase's leave will run through August 31, taking him out of action for over a month. That means the Guardians will have to find a new closer to rely on, as he leads the team with 24 saves this season. Cade Smith has three, and Paul Sewald has two. The Guardians enter MLB games today trailing the Detroit Tigers for first place in the AL Central division. They're 3.5 games behind the second wild card slot in the AL playoff race, and Clase's absence surely won't help. Related:
